Infosys Narayana Murthy



Narayana Murthy : The name speaks it all. The Indian entrepreneur known for making the rare combination possible – Business with Ethics. The entrepreneur who was the first to place employees of his company under the asset side of Balance sheet. Indian Business World and I.T world can never ever forget the invaluable contribution of Narayana Murthy.


Mr. Murthy has designed and implemented the Global Delivery Model- the foundation for the huge success in IT services outsourcing from India. Today he serves many organizations like the UN Foundation, HSBC, Indian School of Business, IIT Bangalore etc have Mr. Murthy on their boards.
A humble man by nature, Mr. Murthy has received innumerable awards and recognitions over a period of time. Some of them includes being featured in Asia’s 50 Most Powerful People [2000] and 25 most influential global executives [2001], World Entrepreneur of the Year – 2003 by Ernst and Young, 15 most admired global leaders [The Economist 2005]...

History of infoys and Narayana murthy:


Mr Narayana Murthy – Is the pioneer of Infosys Technologies Limited, a global consulting and IT services company based in India. Born on August 20th 1946, a Electrical Engineer from National Institute of Engineering, University of Mysore graduated in 1967, with masters degree from IIT Kanpur in the year of 1969.
   The well-known software company which he co-founded with six other professionals in 1981. He served in various capacities within the organization and was for loperceived to be the driving force behind Infosys.
Murthy stepped down as the non-executive Chairman of Infosys in 2011, finally bringing to an end his 30 year long stint with the company.

His Early life and Education:


          Murthy was born on August the 20th, 1946 in Mysore in Karnataka. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Mysore and later obtained a master’s degree from IIT, Kanpur. He joined Patni Computer Systems before which his first job was at IIM, Ahmedabad, where he was a Chief Systems Programmer.
       He Rejecting job offers from companies like HMT, ECIL, TELCO, Air India, Mr. Murthy decided to offer his services at IIM – Ahmedabad as a Chief Systems Programmer, wherein he received the pay of 800 INR, but he consider that phase of his life to be the best one, where he got to learn many things
.Always excelling as a student, he always showed keen interest in learning new things and had shown inclination towards the practical application as compared to theoretical knowledge.Mr. Murthy then offered his services at Patni Computer Systems in Pune, where he met his wife, Sudha Murthy who at the time was an engineer at TELCO.

The Birth and Rise of Infosys:


 
             Mr. Murthy than founded Infosys with six other software professionals in 1987, and opened its first international office in U.S.A. The company started growing rapidly and soon the IPO was also launched. The company expanded its international operations from 1996 from India to Europe & UK. Also it is to be noted that Infosys became the first Indian company to be listed on NASDAQ, under the leadership of Mr. Murthy.
         Infosys was started with an initial investment of just Rs 10000, which Murthy is said to have borrowed from his wife Sudha Murty. The company grew from strength to strength, with Murthy serving as its CEO for the first 21 years of its existence. The company’s stock option schemes created many millionaires. In 1999, Infosys became the first Indian company to be listed on the NASDAQ.
In 2002, Murthy took on the role of Executive Chairman of the Board, giving way to Nandan Nilekani – a co-founder of Infosys – to become the CEO. In 2006, Murthy became non-executive Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor at Infosys, before stepping down and becoming Chairman Emeritus in 2011.
Murthy is now involved with a venture capital firm called Catamaran Investment Private Ltd
  

 His Achievements:

        Murthy is seen as the man behind the global delivery model which is a very important element in the success seen by the Indian IT services outsourcing industry. He has served on the boards of various organizations including Unilever, HSBC, the Wharton School, the Rhodes Trust, and the Indian School of Business, the Ford Foundation and the UN Foundation.

Recognition and Awards:


           In 2008, Murthy was honored with the Padma Vibhushan award conferred by the government of India. He has also received the Légion d’Honneur from the government of France, besides being honored with the title Commander of the Order of the British Empire by the government of Britain.
Murthy also holds the distinction of being the first Indian to win the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year award. In 2005, he was among the ten most-admired global business leaders as per a ranking by Economist.

His Life Beyond Infosys:


             Murthy is much-admired for his simplicity and down-to-earth nature, besides being respected for his strong leadership skills. He is believed to have received many requests asking him to join politics, but has maintained a safe distance from politics so far. He’s married to Sudha Murthy, an author, social worker and recipient of the Padma Shri award.

          
          The leading international business magazine Fortune has come out with its most anticipated list of ‘12 Greatest Entrepreneurs’. And India has a pleasant revelation in the list as Infosys co-founder and Indian IT industry visionary, Narayan Murthy is amongst those listed
                 Murthy, proved that "India could compete with the world by taking on the software development work that had long been the province of the West.
